Many different kinds of volunteer services — medical and non-medical — are needed to perform all the work of a free clinic. Most services are provided on the evenings the clinic is open, but others can and do take place outside of clinic hours.
CCFC’s volunteers range in age from high school students to retired persons, some working regular hours and some doing special, short-term projects. All are necessary to keep our clinic operating properly and as expediently as possible.
And we can always use more . . .
Job Descriptions
- Registration volunteers — Welcome and register patients, enter patient demographic information, answer general questions and explain the procedure for seeing a doctor, interview every patient initially and periodically to help them access other needed social services and resources.
- Providers — Physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners lead our medical team in diagnosing and treating disease and illness. Responsibilities include clinical assessment, evaluation, and the development of treatment plans.
- Nurses — RNs, LPNs, and other nursing specialists offer patient care and provider assistance. They perform intake and discharge duties, and follow-up as needed.
- Lab technicians — Collect specimens and perform or obtain laboratory tests that providers need to diagnose and treat patients.
- Pharmacy technicians — Fill provider-ordered prescriptions, order medications and supplies to keep the pharmacy well-stocked.
- Prescription Assistance Program specialists — Work with patients to establish eligibility for free medications from pharmaceutical companies.
- Interpreters — Help non-English-speaking Hispanic patients fill in their charts, accompany them throughout their clinic visit to interpret for them as needed during social care interview, exam room procedures, and all follow-up activities.
- Behind the scenes — Special project volunteers perform a variety of services “after hours” to support the clinic: fundraising events, chart preparation, maintenance of volunteer records, patient follow-up, to name a few.

Volunteer Training
Volunteers receive on-the-job orientation and training as they are assigned to a position. They “shadow” an experienced volunteer until they feel confident about working a solo shift.
Throughout the year, in-services are scheduled as needed or requested.
Volunteer Appreciation
CCFC hosts an annual Volunteer Recognition Event for all volunteers and their families and guests. These have ranged from a pot luck dinner to a seven-course formal meal prepared and served by the Board of Directors, to an outdoor (under tent) celebration on the grounds of a historical mansion. There is always good food, good music, progress reports, and recognition of volunteer hours and outstanding service.
